HOW TO MINIMIZE SHIP REPAIR COST

l am a chief engineer & having fifteen years of sea experience plus eleven years of shipyard experience. Upon retirement from the shipyard, the Dewkay Marine Consultants firm was established. On my shipyard experience, I realized that the ship owners are paying more money without knowing cost control tactics.
The most important thing for control the cost is the preparation of repair specifications. The owners should get all the prices including for additional jobs before going to dry dock. To get all the prices during the tender stage the owners should prepare perfect repair specifications.

During the project, while overhauling any equipment it will be created unknown additional jobs. For those additional jobs, the shipyard is providing over quotes. But the owners have no other option then it will be done with over quoted price.

As an example almost all repair specifications for electric motor overhauling as follows. 440v,60hz,100kw electric motor to be overhauled stator winding to be cleaned insulation to be improved varnish to be applied & finally satisfactory trials to be shown to the ship staff.

But nobody is mentioning drive & non-drive end covers re sleeving. In most of motors, end covers getting loose & need to be re-sleeved. Since there is no price for the job in the initial quotation shipyard providing price which is three times of
standard price.

This is only a simple example & there is much more to add. Apart from the above content below also important.
We are advising the owners to get an average of 30% deduction with our consultants. The owners should careful when signing a hull blasting agreement. The work done certificates should verify carefully. The final invoice should be referred to carefully.

WHY SHIP OWNERS SHOULD AVOID ADDITIONAL REPAIR SPECIFICATIONS

If shipowners need to minimize ship repair cost they should prepare dry dock repair specifications including all creating additional repair specifications. Otherwise, the shipyard will capture the number of additional repair specifications while the repairs.
Herewith I will explain how the shipyard will capture additional repair specifications & how to shipowner will lose money. If there are a hundred jobs in the initial repair specification shipyard can easily capture two hundred additional repair specifications.

Capturing of additional jobs will not be a matter the issue is shipyard is always providing over quoted prices for the additional jobs. If the shipyard capture two hundred additional jobs & if they charge USD 500 additionally per job the shipowner paying an additional USD 100,000 per project.

If the shipowner carefully refers to their previous vessel dry-docking repair final invoice 75% of prices are less than USD 1000/= figures. Then shipowners should be careful to avoid expenses for additional jobs.
